Keeping Up with the Jetsons:

Incorporating "New" Technologies into your Teaching & Learning Practices FPLC

This group is a part of Mesa Community College's Faculty and Professioanl Learning Communities (FPLC, pronounced "fip lick")

What the Jetsons FPLC is all about?

Admit it, if you are considering participating in this FPLC, you are probably a little geeky. That's ok...you're in good company. Our hope is that we can share experiences learning about and exploring new technologies. We also hope that everyone will get to think a little more thoroughly, reflectively, and systematically about how and why they decide to incorporate a new technology into their teaching or other work processes.

Some Driving Questions:

How do you learn about new technologies?
How do you learn new technologies?
How do you decide whether or not to adopt a new technology?
How do you incorporate a new technology into your teaching and/or other work processes?
How do you assess whether or not the new technology is achieving your goal/s?

Possible Group Goals

By the end of the 2007-2008 academic year, participants in the Jetsons FPLC will have:

learned about various "new" technologies;
implemented one "new" technology into one of his or her classes or work processes; and
assessed the implementation of the "new" technology.

Trivia: The Jetsons officially aired on ABC (1962–1963) for one year. I suspect cancellation was due to the fact that it was simply ahead of its time. In 1985, it was picked up for syndication for 2 more years where it became a huge success (which is how we've all come to know and love the Jetsons).

Will our FPLC be a one-year show? Are we ahead of our time? Should we cancel the show or is there material for another year (renew). Could there be a possible spin-off, instead (perhaps a more focused group or broader topic in technology)?

Anyway, below I've included a poll to determine the future of our FPLC.

Future of Jetsons FPLC for 2008-09 year - Shelley will be speaking to Jonelle (FPLC director for 2008-9 year) about continuing our FPLC. Shelley will possibly facilitate the group, too.

What should be our focus? (Some thoughts) Let's dive into the technology a bit deeper - such as having meetings in Second Life, or revisit the technological needs of our students, perhaps just a focus in Mobile Technology...

Create a tentative schedule for next year - shoot around some thoughts about the development of the community

Biray and Shelley share highlights from their experiences at SXSW
Google Jocking (refers to finding resources on the web, via google search engine) VS. Google Docking (refers to docs app)
Ann found StickK.com (puts contract out on yourself) and Surfthechannel.com (free shows & movies)

Discussion -We discussed ethics and legal issues and how they translate when incorporating new technologies - or as we evolve into new teaching environments.

IRB reports (regulations for research studies: http://www.hhs.gov/ohrp/irb/irb_introduction.htm)
Anecdotal reference point: Australian elementary Ed teacher who had been implementing new media technologies into his classrooms (by using blogs/videos with his students). He had done everything legally and ethically appropriate (got parents consent, use of student first names only, not disclosing personal information,etc). But this week, he was asked by the Dept of Education and Child Services to disable his efforts immediately. His site - http://alupton.edublogs.org/ includes more detail. Read the comments from fellow teachers from all over the world who articulate their thoughts on this issue. See if you agree or disagree with how this whole thing 'went down'... and think about the impact this has had on the students, the system, etc...

Schools and Online Social Networking

Kids Online (the frontline episode Devon was referring to last meeting)

Shelley: Social networking is heavily depending on RSS feeds, it's what links people together and automates networking online. Also, OC is the big umbrella and SN falls underneath it.
Steve: Main difference between SN & OC is in the way identity is formed. In an online community, the discussions you participate in and join, forms your identity. In online social networking, who you are (based on your profile) constructs the discussions you are having. Follow who you are versus what you're talking about.
OC vs SN in terms of education

OC allow more control over the discussions you are having with your students
From students POV, their identities may or may not come thru in the discussions. In SN, students are bringing in their initial profile to class. The traditional form we do this normally is by asking students to tell us a bit about themselves in class on the first/second day.
Question: if SN is advantageous to class environment, do we use existing ones (like MySpace and Facebook) or create one within the context of the class (in WebCT).

RSS Research

Sharon: Has decided to incorporate RSS feeds into google blogger. Will implement this week
Biray: Twitter is in full force, implemented in the classroom. Twitter is having reliability issues and students have been frustrated with this. Incorporated TweetWhatYouEat with the class as an extra credit feature - if they want to try it.
Lyndsi: not implemented yet
Devon: Figured out how to view his students portals in Google (tab- issues).
Shelley: When students update their portal, they have to re-share their site otherwise changes are not seen from teacher end.

Next meeting's agenda

Future topic of discussion - Revisit ethical and legal issues of incorporating some of these new technologies in the classroom? Many students may not know the exact extent of the impact their presence makes online in the future. What is our role as an instructor, how (if at all) do we protect their privacy, or how do we prepare them for this exposure (do we create assignments that challenge students to think about these issues?) What are teacher's legal rights and ethical obligations?

My HES 100 students are setting up blogs (using blogger.com) which they are using as a place to reflect. Each student is working on changing/improving a specific health behavior throughout the course of the semester and are encouraged to use their blog as a place to reflect on their progress. Students will also use this this space to reflect on other class related topics.

In addition to being a place for reflection students will use their blogs to sign up for health-related news feeds in order to follow current trends and changes in the world of health. They will create blog posts to summarize and provide comment on the current events they are reading about.

Greg mentioned a great example of Voki use (Click on the feature "Ask Phil" - when I typed in my question 'how old is planet earth' the avatar confidentally stated "under 40" - LOL)

Zotero -is a free, easy-to-use Firefox extension to help you collect, manage, and cite your research sources. It lives right where you do your work — in the web browser itself.
Ann found quicksilverscreen.com which shows 1st run movies for free.
Greg discussed how Gabcast could be used in foreign language applications

Persuasive TechnolgyChapter 3: Persuasive Computer Tools (pdf attachment include below) - relate this reading to how technology is used in education, creating learning patterns, and developing classroom culture.
Scholarship Assessed Chapter 1: Scholarship in transition (this reading is from the book you received at the beginning of fall semeser) - because many of us are doing a research projects this semester AND one of the objectives of this FPLC is to assess SOTL using new tech, i included this reading to simply revisit what it means to go "beyond the scholarship of discovery, to encourage scholarship in teaching , intergration, and application, as well"

RSS Research - updates

Biray started her class with Twitter. All students have linked to HealthyBee as well as to each other.
Sharon wanted input on how to introduce the RSS feeds using Google Reader but was having trouble sharing the Reader feeds. She decided to embed RSS in student blogs, instead

I will be integrating the use of Twitter feeds into my HES 100 class.
(Assignment Prompt is attached below)

This project relates to both incoming and outgoing feeds for Twitter. Students will follow health & fitness-related incoming tweets, as well as, create their own outgoing messages to the twitiverse.

Prompts will be given throughout the semester for students to give summary feedback of their incoming feeds, as well as, topics to help them create outgoing feeds.
