FYI-- been exploring the use of iPods in academia and found an interesting field study from Duke University in 2004. The full report (15 pages) can be found here:
http://cit.duke.edu/pdf/reports/ipod_initiative_04_05.pdf
A few notable points:
- Students and faculty were most excited by the ability to record lectures in small classroom settings (time-shifting). Recording was the most widely used feature.
- Faculty were worried that students would decided to stop attending class.
- There were significant barriers to success: integration and compatibility issues, access to commercial content, training.
Also been playing with iTunesU (launched by Apple at the end of May ‘07). The concept is exciting, but iteration of v1.0 is a bit boring- lots of talking heads at podiums.
We are all going to need to take conceptualization/creation/production to higher levels to keep the students engaged.
I just got a series of messages with resources for podcasting. I'm just going to cut and paste them in here for now...I'll try to clean up more later:
